Discover the forgotten scientist who predicted global warming 204 years ago!

This Monday (17), the search page of the Google dawned with a tribute to the 204th birthday of the American scientist and activist, Eunice Newton Foote. O doodlemade in the format of animated stories, illustrates the experiment carried out by the researcher to discover the impacts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.

Foote was born on July 17, 1819, in the city of Goshen, located in the state of Connecticut (USA), and was a pioneer in studies on the greenhouse effect. The natural phenomenon promotes the maintenance of global average temperatures, but, recently, it has been aggravated by the emission of gases from human action.

Through work and research, the scientist sought to understand the implications of the heating caused by the Sun on the planet, especially when in contact with the carbon dioxide present in the air. In 1856, studies of it were presented by the scientist joseph henry at American Association for the Advancement of Science. Eunice also became the organization’s second woman.

Despite his contributions to science, including pioneering research on static electricity in the atmosphere, Foote had to constantly fight machismo in order to establish himself in the field, which still makes it difficult for him to recognize the importance of his work.

Also making history in activism, Eunice participated in the first Women’s Rights Conventionin 1848. In the landmark, which took place in Seneca Falls, she was the fifth signatory of the Declaration of Sentimentsa document that demanded female equality in social and legal matters.

Foote died on September 30, 1888, in the state of Massachusetts. However, today, she is buried in Green Wood Cemetery in New York.
