Mel B remembers the difficult times she suffered after divorce

In a new interview with the English network BBC Radio, the singer melanie brownThe Mel B of the Spice Girls, recalled the difficult times she faced when she decided to end her marriage with producer Stephen Belafonte.

The artist said that she had to return to her mother's house after leaving her 'abusive relationship', and says that the most difficult thing was having to start her life over again, with so many problems.

While married to Belafonte, she lived in California, and suddenly found herself penniless, having to return to England, after feeling “powerless” following their separation.

Mel said she left her marriage after suffering emotional, physical and financial abuse at the hands of the film producer.

The singer explained that she moved into her mother Andrea's house in Leeds after spending a considerable amount of money on legal fees and payments to Stephen.

“I wasn’t just emotionally and physically abused, there was all the financial abuse as well,” said the 48-year-old artist.

“I didn’t realize I didn’t have as much money as I thought I did. So I literally had to eat humble pie and live with my mom.”

She continued: “My mom was the kind of person who would say, 'Oh, you left him now, you're fine.' But that couldn’t be further from the truth,” she recalls, making it clear that she didn’t have anyone else’s support at the time.

Mel noted that although she managed to get out of the allegedly abusive relationship, she had to start “all over again.”

“Obviously, any situation is better than being with your abuser, but when you leave that kind of abusive situation, it's like starting all over again,” he explained.

“You have to learn to trust people. You have to learn to trust yourself.”

The former couple, who married in 2007, finalized their divorce in 2018, a year after reaching a private out-of-court settlement.

As part of the settlement, Melanie Brown was ordered to pay the producer $350,000, as well as $5,000 a month in child support for her 12-year-old daughter, Madison.

Mel also has two daughters, Angel, 16, and Phoenix, 25, from previous relationships.
