The artist said that she had to return to her mother's house after leaving her 'abusive relationship', and says that the most difficult thing was having to start her life over again, with so many problems.

While married to Belafonte, she lived in California, and suddenly found herself penniless, having to return to England, after feeling “powerless” following their separation.

Mel said she left her marriage after suffering emotional, physical and financial abuse at the hands of the film producer.

The singer explained that she moved into her mother Andrea's house in Leeds after spending a considerable amount of money on legal fees and payments to Stephen.

“I wasn’t just emotionally and physically abused, there was all the financial abuse as well,” said the 48-year-old artist.

“I didn’t realize I didn’t have as much money as I thought I did. So I literally had to eat humble pie and live with my mom.”

She continued: “My mom was the kind of person who would say, 'Oh, you left him now, you're fine.' But that couldn’t be further from the truth,” she recalls, making it clear that she didn’t have anyone else’s support at the time.
