Chelsea missed out on the group win in the Champions League at the last minute on Wednesday. The already placed Chelsea started as the leader in the group at the last group game and thus had everything in their own hands, while FC Zenit as number three of the group was already condemned to the first knockout round of the Europa League.
Without bench-sitter Hakim Ziyech, Chelsea had an energetic start in St Petersburg, where Serdar Gözübüyük was the referee. Werner tapped in after two minutes from a corner kick by Ross Barkley, which meant only his fourth goal of the season.
Even before half-time, FC Zenit turned the deficit into a lead. Claudinho dived the ball in the 38th minute behind Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, after which Sardar Azmoun neatly played the Spanish goalkeeper over three minutes later: 2-1.
Chelsea made a perfunctory impression in Russia, but came alongside after more than an hour of play. Romelu Lukaku had the ball for the tap-in after good preparatory work by Werner, who seemed to have scored the winning goal in the 85th minute. In the fourth minute of extra time it was still 3-3 by a beautiful volley from Aleksandr Erokhin in the cross.
