Manchester United sacks manager Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is Sunday fired as manager of Manchester United. The Norwegian has to leave because of the disappointing results of the Premier League club this season.

Manchester United suffered a painful 4-1 defeat at low-flying Watford on Saturday despite a goal by Donny van de Beek. It was already the seventh time in twelve league games this season that ‘The Red Devils’ remained without a victory, so that the gap to leader #Chelsea is already twelve points.

According to English media, the management and owners of Manchester United held an emergency meeting on Saturday evening to discuss #Solskjaer’s position and it was already decided to send him away. United confirmed the dismissal on Sunday. Manchester United sacks manager Solskjaer

“Ole will always be a #Manchester United legend,” the club wrote in a statement. “That is why we find it difficult to make this decision.

While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not overshadow the work Ole has done over the past three years to ensure that we can achieve long-term success again.”

Solskjaer’s duties will be taken over by his assistant Michael Carrick for the time being. He is already on the bench on Tuesday when Van de Beek’s team visits Villarreal in the Champions League. United want to appoint an interim coach as soon as possible who finishes the season.

Solskjaer succeeded Mourinho in December 2018

The 48-year-old Solskjaer started after the dismissal of José Mourinho in December 2018 as interim coach at United. He was allowed to stay on as head coach, but great successes did not materially occur under his reign. United finished second in the Premier League last season, twelve points from fellow city rival Manchester City.

United did reach the final of the Europa League, but Solskjaer’s team went down against Villarreal after a long penalty shootout. As a player, the Norwegian was a lot more successful with United; he won the Champions League (1999) and six league titles with the Premier League club. (Manchester United sacks manager Solskjaer)

“His place in the club’s history is secured forever,” said Manchester United. “Not only because of his successes as a player, but also because he is a great person and manager who has given us fantastic moments. He will always be welcome at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family.”

The dismissal of Solskjaer also means that Van de Beek can hope for playing time again. The former #Ajax player was sentenced to a reserve role under the Norwegian. Because of his goal against Watford, he is responsible for the last goal of Manchester United under the reign of Solskjaer.
