Dona Beja: Arilson Lucas is Father Spider

A success in the 1980s, when it was shown on the now-defunct TV Manchete, the soap opera Dona Beja is being adapted by HBO Max and promises strong emotions for its premiere, with no set date yet.

With recording already advanced, the plot includes 40 chapters that will tell the story of Ana Jacinta de São José, the Minas Gerais woman who irritated women and enchanted the men of Araxá (MG).

In the cast of the new edition, Ceará actor Arilson Lucas stands out, who plays Father Aranha, friend, counselor and an essential character in Dona Beja's life.

“It was a challenge, in October they called me to start recording the scenes, I was in Fortaleza, going through the process of saying goodbye to my mother – she discovered metastasized cancer -, I needed to go record and I already participated in a session of photos and preparation. In the middle of preparation, I lost my mother and had to return to Fortaleza and, in the same week, return to recording. So, Dona Beja represents strength for me, because I needed strength to continue my life, my work. Even asking my mother for permission to leave her at the hospital and go, knowing that I might not find her alive again. I had to be strong at that moment”, said the actor.

The actor has some indigenous characters on his resume, but to play Father Aranha, he got in touch with his ancestry to better understand the essence he needed to share on screen.

“I started researching and my mother told the story of her family and my great-grandmother, who lived in the Canoa Quebrada region, which in the past was inhabited by indigenous people. I discovered that she was a typical indigenous woman – with black hair and dark skin – who fell in love with a Portuguese man, which represents the history of Brazilian colonization. It was with this issue of indigenous strength in mind, that I recorded it with a headdress on my head, on my birthday, that was a very strong representation of freedom,” she said.

Born in Fortaleza (CE), Arilson has more than 22 years of career in TV, theater, cinema and advertising.

Currently airing on Rede Globo, with the soap opera Elas por Elas, a work adapted by Alessandro Marzon and Thereza Falcão, the actor gives life to the character Calixto Fontes.

Arilson was also in the show Novo Mundo, when the Indian Cauré played, on the same broadcaster. On HBO, he is in the cast of the miniseries O Hóspede Americano, where he plays the character of Antônio Simplício da Silva.
