For the second time in almost 40 years, “Popeye” must be adapted into a new live-action film

Last Tuesday (19), according to information obtained by the North American magazine Variety, Popeye, the famous character from the cartoon that bears his name, should receive a new live-action film production. This is the second production of its kind about the character in almost forty years, the first of which was released in 1980, with actor Robin Williams in the lead role.

The stories about the sailor who gains strength from eating spinach were officially released in 1929, having turned 95 years old in October 2023. Therefore, there is an expectation that the film, still unnamed, should hit theaters on the 100th anniversary of the comics, in 2029, but so far, there is no information about the cast or even the team.

Also according to the magazine, the producer responsible for the project is the American Chernin Entertainment, responsible for the “Rua do Medo” trilogy and the most recent adaptation of the trilogy of Planet of the Apes, with support from distributor King Features, which participated in the creation of the character in the 1920s.

The story was adapted into a cartoon aired in 1960, and in 1980, Popeye received its first live-action production, directed by Robert Altman and produced by Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions. in which Robin Williams brought the sailor to life on the big screen, reaching 60 million dollars at the worldwide box office, a feat for the time, as the budget was three times less than what it raised. The plot is based on Popeye, a charismatic sailor who is always trying to protect his girlfriend, Olivia Palito, from the clutches of his eternal enemy, Brutus. When he eats spinach, Popeye becomes much stronger and more confident, being able to overcome any challenge.
