Former minister saves elderly woman who choked in restaurant

A security camera recorded the moment when João Roma, former Minister of Citizenship, was the protagonist of a rescue where a lady choked on food in a restaurant, on the afternoon of last Wednesday, June 7th. She was saved and is doing well thanks to the help of the former minister.

João Roma performed a procedure known as the “heimlich maneuver”, which is based on hugging the person from behind and squeezing them until the food that caused them to choke comes out, in an attempt to make the choking pass and put an end to the problem. The situation occurred at the Chez Bernard restaurant in Salvador, Bahia.

The images recorded the moment when Roma was having lunch with a friend in an establishment when a lady, who was sitting with a friend at the next table, took her hands to her neck to indicate that she was choking on a fish bone and began to cry. feel bad. João Roma and his friend soon realized the situation and rushed to help her. Soon, João performed the Heimlich maneuver, helping to relieve the lady. The images show that the food even fell out of the lady’s mouth and, soon, she breathes again and feels good.

“I was having lunch with two friends and, at a nearby table, there were two ladies. I was on the phone and I saw her gasp, I got up, dropped the phone and went there to do the maneuver. She choked on the piece of meat. Then she came to thank me and told me that she is 90 years old. It was instinctive and thank God everything worked out.”said João Roma to the column.

The images that were captured by the restaurant’s camera were released by third parties, according to the PL’s advisory in Bahia, through a note. After the scare, the lady said she was fine and very grateful for João’s help.
