Last Sunday (11), the American TV channel CBS broadcast the annual ceremony of Tony Awards, the largest and most prestigious theater award in the United States. The celebration matches the prizes GrammyIn the song; Oscarin cinema and EmmyOn TV.

The organization is American Theater Wing and from The Broadway League. This year's CBS broadcast broke an important milestone: it became the most-watched theater awards broadcast since the Tony Awards of 2019, with 4.3 million viewers. The mark represents a 2% increase compared to the previous year, when 3.9 million viewers watched the awards show, which was the first to be broadcast across the United States, from coast to coast.

Furthermore, the award ceremony had more reasons to become historic: Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee became the first openly non-binary actors to win a Tony. Newell received the award for her performance as the character Lulu in the musical “Shucked”, while Ghee received the award for her performance with Jerry/Daphne in the musical “Some Like it Hot”.

Another notable fact about the award ceremony is that it was completely improvised. A WGA, Writers Guild of America (Writers League of America) refused to write for the ceremony (which needs a script) because of the writers' strike, which has been going on since May. This opened space for the event organization to seek a solution through improvisation. Ariana DeBose was the event's presenter and started the awards ceremony with a dance performance and took a stand in favor of the writers.

In addition to Newell and J. Harrison Ghee, actors Victoria Clark (best leading actress in a musical) were awarded for the musical “Kimberly Akimbo”; and Sean Hayes (Best Lead Actor in a Play), for “Good Night, Oscar”. The award for best play went to “leopoldstadt”, by director Tom Stoppard.
