More foreign coaches than Brazilians for the first time!

For the first time in the history of the Brazilian Championship, there will be more foreign coaches than Brazilians. In all, there will now be 11 commanders gringos in the first division, 7 Portuguese and four Argentines. The highest number since the Championship started to be disputed by consecutive points in 2003.

New gringo commanders in the area

Just this week, Vasco and Internacional announced their new commanders, the Maltese cross announced the Argentinean Rámón Diaz who came from Arab football, the Colorado I also brought in the Argentine Eduardo Coudet who was without a club, but who was recently still here in Brazil, in charge of Atlético-MG. Botafogo, on the other hand, debuted this week with the Portuguese Bruno Lage, who took the place of his compatriot Luís Castro.

How it all started, even the success of the Portuguese

The first foreign coach in the era of accrued points was the Uruguayan Darío Pereira who coached Paysandu and Grêmio. But the great peak for hiring technicians from abroad was after 2019, when the Portuguese Jorge Jesus made history at Flamengo, which that season was Brazilian and Libertadores champion. That same year, Jorge Sampaoli (today coach of the Rio de Janeiro team), also stood out in charge of Santos, the Argentine took the fish to the runner-up.

From 2019 until this year, there were 37 foreigners working in Serie A teams, and since Jorge Jesus left Flamengo in 2020, who has been successful within the national territory is Abel Ferreira, coach of Palmeiras, the Portuguese arrived in Verdão in November 2020, and quickly fell in favor of the Palmeiras fans, having won two Libertadores, a Copa do Brasil and a Campeonato Brasileiro.

Another that stands out is the Argentine Juan Pablo Vojvoda, current commander of Fortaleza, who has been at the club since May 2021, Vojvoda was champion of the Copa do Nordeste in 2022, and having led the team to a fourth position in the Brazilian Championship of 2021, an unprecedented feat for the tricolor from Ceará.
