São Paulo surprises and eliminates Palmeiras, guaranteeing a millionaire bonus in the Copa do Brasil

On Thursday (13), São Paulo defeated Palmeiras in the middle of Allianz Parque, in the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil, with the score of 2 to 1. The victory of the tricolor team and the classification earned the club’s coffers a BRL 9 million bonus.

The bonus is given to all clubs that advanced from the quarterfinals to the semifinals, as well as Grêmio and Flamengo that, on Wednesday (12), defeated Bahia and Athletico-PR, respectively, and also continue in the competition. The last place in the semifinal will be disputed between Corinthians and América-MG, next Saturday (15).

São Paulo has already surpassed its initial goal, which was to at least reach the quarterfinals. In the Copa do Brasil alone, the São Paulo tricolor already guaranteed the club’s coffers an accumulated amount of R$ 18.7 million, after having eliminated Ituano, Sport and now Palmeiras.

Despite being one of the most successful clubs in the country, having won three Copa Libertadores and three FIFA Club World Cups, São Paulo has never won the Copa do Brasil.

The team from São Paulo had, as the best campaign in its history, only one final, in 2000, in which it was defeated by Cruzeiro, currently the biggest champion of the competition.

Last season, São Paulo also made it far in the competition, but was defeated by Flamengo, who would become the champion of the edition, precisely in the semifinal.

This 2023 edition of the Copa do Brasil has an extra factor. At the end of the competition, the accumulated prize amounts will have a record value.

If São Paulo, which will face Corinthians or América-MG, advances to the finals of the competition, it will guarantee a value of at least R$ 30 million, which is delivered to the runner-up; and if the club wins the title, the award for the champion will be R$ 70 million — about R$ 10 million more than what Flamengo received for the title in 2022.

There is still no date for when the semifinal matches will take place.
