Thailand's parliament approves bill legalizing same-sex marriage

This Wednesday (27), the Thai parliament reached a historic milestone by approving, by a large majority, a marriage equality bill. This significant step positions Thailand as one of the most liberal countries in Asia, moving towards the legalization of same-sex unions, approaching countries such as Taiwan and Nepal, which have already adopted similar measures.

The bill received unanimous support from all major Thai parties and was the result of more than a decade of legislative development. However, to enter into force, it still requires the approval of the Senate and the sanction of the King, following a period of 120 days after parliamentary approval.

Historic approval

The legislation, which received 400 votes in favor among the 415 parliamentarians present, marks an effort to reduce disparities in Thai society and promote equality. Danuphorn Punnakanta, chairman of the parliamentary committee responsible for the bill, expressed a desire to make history and invited all legislators to join in this historic moment.
