The favorite and favorites to win the 2023 Boston Marathon

In the men’s event, the favorite, to the surprise of zero people, is the Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge. Among the women, the story is very different, there is a very strong peloton that promises a competition that can be electrifying.

Today, April 17th is the day of boston marathon. In case you didn’t know, the race will be broadcast on the ESPN 2 subscription channel or on the Star+ app from 10:30 am. Corrida no Ar will make the alternative broadcast soon, starting at 10:15 am and I will have my friends with me Paulinho Stone It is Felipe Arakawafollow here.

Let’s talk about the favorites to win the race. In the male is favorite is Eliud Kipchoge. Ready. He is simply the only marathon runner in history who always shows his favoritism at the end of the race, that is, he enters as the favorite and wins.

But Sérgio, in London 2020 he “lost” when he reached eighth place. Ah, okay, in the middle of the pandemic when no one could train the way they used to. He trained without his class and what happened that year was an exception. Forget it. The man is super-focused and wants to complete the majors mandala by winning them all. Beating Boston, he could close in New York at the end of this year.

“Ah, but Boston has ups and downs and he has never run a marathon with that profile.” Yes, but he himself said that in Kenya training is all up and down, he didn’t do anything specific for this race and said he’s prepared. So yes, he is the favorite and I can’t imagine that any of the other six athletes with a sub 2:05 time can give him some “heat”. I think he only loses if an Irish priest appears in the middle of the test…

Is there a chance Kipchoge won’t win? There is, of course. Do you want to bet he loses, Sérgio? I am not! I would never put my rich money on such a bet.

Kipchoge was asked at the press conference if he would try to beat the race record and he replied that he would try to win. I remind you that the record is 2:03:02 by Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai in 2011.

Among the women, the story is VERY different because there are eight athletes with a time of less than 2h20 in the peloton and the race can be full of emotions. Check out:

I would also keep an eye on the Kenyan Helen Obiri which did not debut well in New York and is “bitten”, in addition to the American Sarah Hallwho overcame injuries to be able to line up in the race in which her husband, Ryan Hallstill holds the best record for an American (2:04:58 in 2011 – the same year as the race record).

Having those times that I mentioned above as a personal record is also not a guarantee of victory because races like Boston always reserve surprises for everyone. The only surprise would be Kipchoge not winning the men’s event, of course.

The Boston Marathon has a record number of Brazilians among amateurs and among them is the carioca Miguel Moronewhich I interviewed for Café & Corrida (watch here). He will start in the elite, at the invitation of the organization, to compete in the master test (athletes over forty years old). Good luck to all brazucas!
