Commentator Paulo Morsa Ex Band and Transamerica, dies at 78 years old
Paulo Roberto Martins, known as “Morsa”, a football journalist and commentator, died on Tuesday (20). According to information from family members, Morsa had been treating heart problems for some time. He began his career in 1971, at the time analyzing football, on the radio, in Santos, his homeland. In 1984, he transferred to Rádio Gazeta. Five years later, he went to Rádio Globo, where he remained until 2005, when he was invited to head the sports section at Rádio Record.
Walrus became famous too, on TV. TV Cultura was his first work, but he stood out even on Record, until 2007, where he was part of the commentators table for “Debate Bola” and “Terceiro Tempo”. It was during this period, due to his protruding mustache, that he received the funny nickname, which enshrined him.
His last outstanding work was at Jogo Aberto, until 2021. In his second year, at Bandeirantes, in 2015, Morsa won the ACEESP award, from sports writers, as the best commentator elected on open TV, in honor made at Clube Sírio. In 2002, he won the same award, but in the Radio category.
At Rádio Transamérica, in the last years of his career, he collected fame and controversy. Last year, he was summarily dismissed, after blunt statements, criticizing coach Abel Ferreira, from Palmeiras. His exalted and fearless way of saying what he thought was the hallmark of good journalism practiced by Morsa in these 51 years of career, completed this year. Morsa studied in the same class, in primary school, in Santos, as his Santos idols Turcão and Joel Camargo.
Renata Fan, journalist from Jogo Aberto da Band and the board of Santos, among several people from the sports world, mourned the passing of the commentator. There is still no information about the wake and burial of Walrus. Probable location will be your city, Santos. He leaves a wife and three children. Despite being from Santos, Morsa currently lived in Atibaia.
