Before the debut of the selection, Brazilian breaks record in the World Cup

The start of the Women’s World Cup already has a new Brazilian record, even before the debut of the selection. This is because the assistant referee Neuza Inês Back matched the mark of Carlos Eugenio Simon when participating in the whistle of the game between Australia and Ireland, to confirm participation in three different editions of World Cups.

Before, the gaucho obtained the record in isolation, having refereed the men’s competitions held in 2002, 2006 and 2010. Differently, Neuza has two men’s World Cups in his curriculum, in 2018 and 2022, in addition to participating in the women’s edition of this year, 2023.

In addition, the experienced 38-year-old referee also participated in two Olympic Games, held in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, in 2016 and 2020, respectively. Neuza is living the peak of her career, which began with the great influence of her brother, who is also a referee, André Back.

“My relationship with refereeing started with my brother, who was a referee for the Santa Catarina Federation and invited me to be part of the team. My first stopovers were as a delegate, I got interested and went to take the (referee) course. In 2007, I took the test, I passed and from then on I started to be part of the“, he said in an interview some time ago.

Another relevant curiosity of Neuza is that the main referee of her trio in the World Cup, Edina Alves has been her best friend for 15 years. More than that, both share an apartment in Jundiaí, in the interior of São Paulo, until today. This Thursday, the 20th, both joined Leila Cruz to referee the first game of the hosts, Australia.
