How they came about

It was during the 15th century, in Japan, that the main inspiration for these shoes emerged: the traditional tabi sock. They were produced with the big toe separated from the remaining toes, which made it easier to wear the traditional sandals of the time. After identifying the trend and getting inspired, designer Martin Margiela began the creative process to create tabi shoes.

In 1989 the first collection with the shoes was presented, and since then they have been frequent on the brand's catwalks. Maison Margiela says that “Each of the pieces captures the avant-garde and non-conformist spirit of the house and constitutes a heritage classic that reappears in each collection.”

With the possibility of creating iconic, personalized and unique looks, this type of shoe with a more special design is popular with great fashionistas who experiment to create a more personal style.
