Vasco da Gama presented a proposal to Argentine coach Gustavo Alfaro, 60, who was most recently working as coach of the Ecuadorian national team. Alfaro, at this moment, analyzes the proposal of the Rio de Janeiro club, but according to its representatives, it is still evaluating the club’s squad. The Basque board, however, expects the agreement to happen in the next few hours, although there was no deadline for the coach’s response.

Since the dismissal of coach Maurício Barbieri, on June 23, Vasco has not had a commander. William Batista, the interim coach who is coaching the team while there is no new coach, has won one match and lost two since taking over.

Alfaro, who would be the main name to take charge of Vasco da Gama, had the most outstanding work, at least recently, the period he managed Boca Juniors, in 2019, when he won a Supercopa Argentina title.

In addition to this, the other titles won by the coach were in 2007, when he won the Copa Sudamericana, with Arsenal de Sarandí and then in the 2012-2013 season, on his return to Arsenal, winning the Argentine Cup and the Argentine Super Cup.

With the Ecuadorian national team, Alfaro managed to take the team to the World Cup, but was unable to make the Ecuadorians advance to the knockout stage, in a group with the Netherlands, Senegal and Qatar.

Vasco currently ranks 19th in the Brazilian Championship, with 9 points (2 wins and 3 draws) in 14 games. Only América Mineiro has a campaign worse than that of the Cruz-Maltinos, despite having the same number of points, they are behind the Cariocas in terms of goal difference.
