James Rodríguez goes to the Copa América with an uncertain future at São Paulo

Midfielder James Rodríguez is going through a moment of uncertainty at São Paulo. With few opportunities in 2024, the Colombian travels next Monday (27) to Barranquilla, where he will join the Colombian team for preparatory friendlies, aiming for the Copa América which starts in June.

The Colombian team will play two friendlies in the United States. The first will be against the home team on June 8th in Washington and the second will be on the 15th against Bolivia in Hartford, Connecticut.

Little game time

In decline at São Paulo, Jamez has had few opportunities in the team, especially after the arrival of coach Luis Zubeldía. With the current coach, the player, Jamez participated in just one match, in the 0-0 draw with Palmeiras almost a month ago. On that occasion, the player entered the field 40 minutes into the second half and, during the current season, he participated in just eight games and has scored a single goal.

The player's future remains uncertain at the São Paulo club and the possibility of James no longer wearing the tricolor shirt upon returning from the Copa América cannot be ruled out. The Colombian's contract runs until June 30, 2025 and the São Paulo board is willing to listen to proposals for the midfielder. The Colombian press states that the player has a proposal from a team in Spain, a country in which the athlete has already played and played for Real Madrid.

Zubeldía talks about the midfielder's future

When asked about James Rodríguez's future at São Paulo, the coach hesitated and did not give a concrete answer. Zubeldía stated that the chances of playing are equal for everyone, that there is space and it is given. “There is space. Over time we will see how his situation turns out, but I give space to everyone”, sayssaid the coach at a press conference last Thursday (23).
