Macron suggests sending Western troops to help Ukraine

The Conference on aid to Ukraine began with the participation of more than twenty heads of state and government from the European Union. Emmanuel Macron, in one of his speeches, emphasized that the decisions adopted by the summit members are usually six to eight months out of date, which results in a response that does not adequately meet the urgent Ukrainian needs. The French president highlighted the importance of streamlining decision-making processes to guarantee more effective and timely assistance to the Ukrainian people.

Macron pointed out that several of the leaders present previously talked about the urgency of sending sleeping bags, helmets and medical utensils, but now they are discussing what to do to meet the need to send missiles and tanks. From the perspective of the President of France, the mistake of European leaders is not to anticipate the possible developments of the war, and he was categorical about the fact that the possibility of sending Western troops can no longer be discarded.

However, Macron's position caused concern among the other leaders present, as sending troops would involve the countries directly in the war, which would be different from the support offered to date. After the conference, representatives from several countries made their statements.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated, after the meeting, that there is no consensus on the possibility of sending European troops to participate in the conflict. Corroborating, Spain expressed its lack of agreement regarding the proposal to send troops from European countries to Ukrainian territory, although it admitted that there is “urgency” in accelerating the sending of military equipment to Kiev.Â

This Tuesday (27), an official representative of the British government reported that there are no immediate intentions to deploy more soldiers to Kiev. He argued that the United Kingdom already has a reduced contingent of personnel in the country, providing support to the Ukrainian armed forces, especially in terms of medical training.Â

Furthermore, Swedish Premier Ulf Kristersson, whose nation is poised to join NATO following Hungary's approval, has stated that the issue of sending troops is not an issue. currently being discussed.

Possibility of progress

Even though the European heads of state have, for now, ruled out the possibility suggested by Macron, the meeting brought prospects for progress in terms of sending ammunition to Ukraine.

Macron stated that European Union leaders and government representatives chose to expand efforts in the area of ammunition, aiming to obtain more agile and concrete results in the eight existing coalitions.
