Maya Massafera opened her heart to Vogue magazine, in a letter published this Friday (31), for her first fashion shoot after her gender transition. She wrote an account of what she experienced before and after the procedure in an open letter: “My life began at 43.” The influencer revealed that she did not intend to make the transition public, and that she was not yet prepared to tell everything she had been through, but it was necessary due to the distorted stories that appeared in the media.

New beginnings

“In my plans, I intended to stay away from everything for longer, but the media found out and some very distorted articles started to come out. I saw that the best thing was to face it and tell the story my way.” stated Maya reveals that for the first time in her life she feels truly happy, but at the same time she feels afraid of people's reactions: “I want to look in the mirror, leave the house and live. At the same time, I have a lot of fear and dysphoria, because leaving the house has become an event. People want to see if I’m really feminine, what has changed most about me and how my body is.”

“There is a saying that life begins at 40. Mine literally began at 43. For the first time, I understand what it means to be happy. My mood is happy. Talking to doctors and psychologists, they explained to me that my state of happiness is the normal state of a person who was born in the body and gender with which they identify and that, probably in the future, I will get used to this state”, she said.

Freedom

The influencer says she spent 40 years in a “prison”, and that the changes began before she even understood that she was a trans woman: “It was 24 hours a day inside a body and gender that weren’t mine. I was born with a female soul, I was a woman trapped in a male body. I had my happy moments, but I was not a happy person. Even more so because I didn’t understand myself as a trans woman.”

She ended the letter with a special thank you to her mother, who was her greatest partner during the transition. As for the future, she assured that she intends to continue in entertainment, make a difference in the world and positively influence her followers.
