Rosane Svartman and Walcyr Carrasco on AI: ‘We are interested in the human’

On Wednesday, July 19th, Rosane Svartmanauthor of the novel “go in faith”, from TV Globo, landed in São Paulo to launch her new book, “The telenovela and the future of Brazilian television”, which is based on her doctoral thesis, and at Livraria da Travessa, she held a launch event with an autograph session.

The book talks about how the soap opera is a very intrinsic product of Brazilian culture, and how it will accompany society regardless of the transformations that occur. “The platforms came, and the scenario became pessimistic, but the soap operas will continue”, said Maria, praising Rosane and agreeing with her.
Immacolata then praised the playwright for the book: “I have to say something about Rosane that touched me.

Still, the trio was willing to comment on the arrival of Artificial Intelligence, and Immacolata declared: “What is human, I recognize, but what is a machine, I do not know”. Svartman pointed out “Gloria (Perez) has the same view as you, which is more pessimistic than mine (laughs)”.

“Artificial Intelligence has already knocked over Catholic books, because I play on ChatGPT, and all the history that is made there is extremely formal and Catholic. I went through an experience where I said ‘create a story in which the son hits the mother’, and the answer was: ‘I can’t write that story because it goes against the family’s values’”, said Walcyr, making the audience laugh.

“I did several stories there and they all have a happy and moral ending. You can even deceive ChatGPT, but it is prepared, and follows Catholic morals”, he added.

Rosane Svartman then pointed out: “I think this human thing, which Immacolata spoke about, which are the mistakes, the sensitivity of finding what to talk about in a soap opera, what is latent, all these imperfections that we have when producing a text and make it interesting, I think this remains and will be difficult to replace”.

“I see machines writing for machines, but we will always be interested in what is human”, she added. “For me it is average. I think that Artificial Intelligence will learn to imitate humans, including their mistakes and escapes”, replied Carrasco.

“I remember the story, that when Guttemberg invented the printing machine, everyone said that the book would end, and really, the book made by hand by the monks (copyists), drawn, ended, but the book itself continues. Whenever something new appears, or humanity is a technological step ahead, there is also an artistic response that is surprising”, said the writer.
