Santos ends negative sequence with exciting victory over Goiás

Santos fans finally had reason to celebrate. This Sunday (9), the team faced Goiás in Vila Belmiro for the 14th round of the Brasileirão and won by 4 to 3. With this result, Santos ended a sequence of 12 games without winning. It was Paulo Turra’s first victory as the team’s coach, easing the club’s crisis a little. On the other hand, Goiás suffered its third consecutive defeat in the championship and remains in the relegation zone, with 11 points added.

The game got off to a slow start, with few scoring opportunities for both teams. However, in the 15th minute, Santos opened the scoring with a goal by Marcos Leonardo. Zé Ricardo’s mistake in the ball was taken advantage of by Sandry, who found the number 9 of Peixe. Despite being marked, Marcos Leonardo dribbled past his opponents and finished with precision in the left corner of the goalkeeper.

The goal accelerated the pace of the game, with Santos gaining confidence and Goiás needing to expose themselves more. The result was a busy first half, with three more goals. In the 26th minute, Goiás had an opportunity to equalize with a free kick on the right, but William Oliveira hit the post by João Paulo after a slight deflection by the Santos goalkeeper.

In the 29th minute, Marcos Leonardo scored again, extending Santos’ advantage. João Paulo made a long throw, João Lucas received it from the right and crossed to the center forward, who caught goalkeeper Tadeu off guard.

Goiás managed to close the gap in the 39th minute, with Guilherme converting a penalty. After a contact between Kevyson and Maguinho, the referee consulted the VAR and signaled the penalty. João Paulo even touched the ball, but could not avoid the goal of the number 60 of Goiás.

Before the end of the first half, Santos extended its advantage. In a quick counterattack, Marcos Leonardo advanced and made a precise pass to Mendoza, who finished with speed and put the ball in the left corner of Tadeu’s goal.

In the second half, Goiás dominated possession of the ball and pressed for a draw. In the 15th minute, Guilherme scored a long-distance goal, taking advantage of an error in Santos’ ball output. The indefensible kick rocked João Paulo’s nets.

Goiás’ tie came in the 36th minute, with João Magno finishing accurately after a crafted play. It looked like the match would end in a draw, however, in extra time, the controversial move that defined the result occurred. Referee Bruno Arleu de Araújo called a dubious foul inside the Goiás area, resulting in a penalty for Santos. Even with the VAR consultation, the judge confirmed the appointment, causing revolt in the Goiás players. Mendoza converted the penalty, ensuring victory for Peixe.

This was the second match in a row for Santos without the presence of fans in Vila Belmiro, due to a punishment imposed on the club due to an incident against Corinthians. Santos was penalized on Friday and will have to play eight matches behind closed doors and at least 150 km away from their stadium. On Monday (10), the club will appeal in an attempt to reduce the punishment.

The next game for Peixe will be a classic against São Paulo on Sunday (16), while Goiás will receive Atlético-MG on Monday (17), both for the Brazilian Championship.
