Sarah Ferguson’s Mastectomy Lasted Eight Hours: ‘Lucky To Be Alive’

a friend of Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson told the magazine “Fabulous” of the newspaper “The Sun” that the ex-wife of prince andrew previously had a mastectomy, which lasted eight hours, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and said she feels “lucky” to be alive. The 63-year-old author is being cared for at home following the procedure which ‘was more complicated than people think’.

“The surgery lasted eight hours and was more complicated than people think… Today, the message she wants to send is that she is very grateful and feels very lucky to be alive. She wants to thank the two incredible surgeons Christine Choy and Stuart James who saved her life and all the medical staff who worked tirelessly to help her,” commented the friend.

The source added: “Most people tend to associate breast cancer with a lump, but this is not always the case. A nodule can be detected by the patient, but this was a ‘shadow’, which can go unnoticed as it is a wider spread of cancer cells.”

The informant further stated that in Sarah’s case, “a biopsy was taken of the shaded area of tissue and a few days later the results came back to confirm the diagnosis – breast cancer.”

Prince Andrew is also supporting his ex-wife as she recovers.

Speaking on an episode of her podcast “Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah”, which was released shortly after the diagnosis became public, Sarah recalled: “It was after a bank holiday and I live in this area – in the Windsor area – and it was a hot day and I didn’t feel like going to London. It’s easy to put it off – ‘I’ll do it next week,’” she recalled.

Until her sister, Jane Ferguson Luedecke, convinced her to go.

She continued: “I usually always do what she says because she gets so pissed off. She said, ‘No, go. I need you to go. I need you to go.’”

Sarah said: “If it wasn’t for that extraordinary (test), they put an injection in you, contrast and show the contrast, which shows them where to go, if I hadn’t done that… it was just a shadow… they wouldn’t have discovered that this needed to be addressed immediately.”

“She is also immensely grateful to the team involved in the mammogram that identified her disease, which was otherwise symptom-free, and believes that her experience highlights the importance of regular screening.”
