Shakira makes history at VMA 2023 by receiving award and moving audience with show

Last Tuesday (12), Colombian singer Shakira thrilled the audience at the VMA 2023 with a show lasting around 10 minutes that featured great hits from her career.

In her moment on stage, Shakira played hits such as “She Wolf”, “Te Felicito”, “Ohos Así”, “Whenever, Whenever” and “Hips Don't Lie”. As she performed “Bzrp Music Sessions # 53”, a song full of insults to Piqué, the singer's ex-husband, Shakira threw herself into the audience and was carried away in one of the most striking moments of the night. The singer received the “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award”, given as a tribute to artists who contributed to the different artistic manifestations involved in music videos and who impacted pop culture through their work. The feat in itself is already great, but it becomes even more special since Shakira is the first Latin artist to achieve it. Other names that have also won the honor are Michael Jackson, Madonna, David Bowie, Rihanna and Beyoncé.

Shakira's performance became even more special because it was the first time that the singer appeared singing since she performed on Jimmy Fallon's program in March 2023. The singer had already been off the stage for almost three years.

VMA 2023

The Video Music Awards (VMA) is a ceremony that rewards the best in music, held by American MTV. This year, it took place in Newark, in the United States, and Anitta was one of the winners. The Brazilian won the award for Best Latin Music Video for “Funk Rave”. Thus, Anitta beat Shakira herself, who was also competing for the award, and other great Latin music artists, such as Bad Bunny and Rosalía.

Still, it is worth remembering that this is the second time that Anitta has won the award. Last year, she also took the trophy for “Evolver”. Anitta thanked her fans for the achievement and celebrated the second consecutive award: “I can not believe. Brazil, we are here again. Again. For the second time”, celebrated the Rio native.
