Tom Holland admits drinking problem: ‘I felt enslaved’

Tom Holland featured this week on the “On Purpose” podcast with celebrity guru Jay Shettyand during the conversation the “Spider-Man” actor admitted his drinking problem, at a time when he felt ‘enslaved’ by alcohol before getting sober.

“All I could think about was drinking. It really freaked me out,” Zendaya’s boyfriend confessed.

When Holland decided not to drink anymore, he found it difficult to avoid alcohol in social situations.

“I felt like I couldn’t be social,” stated the “The Crowded Room” star: “I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lemon soda. I couldn’t go out to dinner. I was really struggling. I just said to myself, ‘Why? Why am I enslaved by this drink? Why am I so obsessed with the idea of ​​having this drink?’”.

The actor challenged himself to go six months without consuming alcohol and when he celebrated his 27th birthday last June, he said he was the “happiest I’ve ever been in my life”.

“I could sleep better. I could handle problems better… Things that would go wrong on set, that would normally piss me off, I could move on from. I had much better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter. I’m happy to say it – I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not shying away from it in any way,” he added, noting that even his mother decided to have the ‘experience’ of sobriety.

“She is loving it and it’s been amazing, I can’t believe the difference I feel from not drinking. Yes, I feel amazing.”, she concluded.

MENTAL HEALTH

Tom Holland explained in a new interview this week about his decision to take a ‘much needed’ break from work following filming for his new AppleTV+ series “The Crowded Room”, which premiered June 9 on the platform.

The 27-year-old actor confessed that the series touches on some difficult topics, such as heavy trauma and mental health issues, and because of that he decided to take a year off to recover from that “difficult” role.

In conversation with the program “ExtraTV”, he commented: “It was a difficult moment, for sure. We were exploring certain emotions that I’ve definitely never experienced before, and on top of that, being a producer dealing with the day-to-day issues that come with any film set added an extra level of pressure.”

“I love the learning curve of becoming a producer… I’m no stranger to hard work. I’ve always kind of lived with this idea that hard work is good work. I really enjoyed it, but then again, the show broke me.”

And the actor is enjoying getting some rest from work, and is dedicating more time to his relationship with Zendaya.

“I have seen my family. I have seen my friends. I’ve been playing golf… I’m gardening and buying plants and doing my best to keep them alive and all that kind of stuff. I’ve just been trying to be, you know, a regular Kingston guy and just relax.”, she stated.

The new series that Tom Holland filmed last year, which has just premiered on AppleTV+, is a psychological thriller.
