Ukraine closer to membership, but no date set

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that Ukraine is closer to NATO. The statement was made this Wednesday during a press conference, along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky stated that the results of the meeting were good, but that it would be better if there was an effective invitation. At the meeting that took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, it was agreed that Ukraine’s entry into NATO will take place, but there is no date set.

Stoltenberg emphasized that the moment to incorporate the country will be when the allies of the alliance believe that the conditions exist for such a feat, and that this is not the moment, since Ukraine is waging a war with Russia, and it is important to ensure the country’s victory Ukrainian.

The Ukrainian president yesterday was tough in his speech, saying that vague words were being spoken and that the alliance had no real intention of inviting Ukraine or making it a member of NATO.

A nod to Ukraine had already happened 15 years ago, but without any success. However, on this new journey, alliance leaders say the difference is that Ukraine will be exempt from one of the two stages of the accession process. The country will not need to go through the Accession Action Plan, a plan that involves many requirements and ends up making the process slow.

Another important part of Ukraine’s possible entry is a new NATO council created especially for the country. The objective is to increase defenses against Russia. The G7 is also expected to announce an aid package for the Ukrainian country.

With this aid process for Ukraine, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov believes this is a dangerous mistake that could affect Russia’s security and expose Europe to great risks in the future.
