Coach Bruno Lage is disputed by Brazilian and European clubs after the departure of Luís Castro

Coach Bruno Lage, 47, is being hotly contested to take charge of Botafogo, after the departure of Luís Castro, who left the alvinegro to command Al-Nassr, from Saudi Arabia. According to information from “The globe”the alvinegra board considers the conversations still quite recent, since the Portuguese coach has proposals from European football, where he seems to be more inclined to remain when he received contact from other Brazilian clubs, such as Atlético-MG.

Bruno Lage has been without a club since he was fired from Wolverhampton in October 2022 after winning just six points in 8 games, leaving Wolves in 10th place in the Premier League. He also worked in 2019 for Benfica’s main team and ended the season with a title in the Portuguese Championship.

John Textor is who is leading the negotiation on Botafogo’s side, and understands that the coach is the potential name to replace Luís Castro, with the intention of setting up a project in the medium and long term, with the good work that the Portuguese player does. In his two jobs as manager, he has given space to youth players to become starters, such as João Félix at Benfica and Max Kilman at Wolverhampton.

Lage may not have a preferred tactical formation, but he has a well-defined playing style. Having the ball is a goal, but it’s not an obsession. It’s an objective possession, when the players have the ball, the plan is always to speed up in search of the opponent’s goal.

Botafogo’s proposal pleases Bruno, and seems to be moving forward, even if in shorter steps. After all, Lage recently had a son with his wife, Maria, whose wish is that the child does not go through a big change so soon. However, the salary part offered was very similar to the amounts that Luís Castro received when he was at the club. In any case, there is no agreement fully under way because the Portuguese family is not 100% comfortable with the idea of living in Brazil.
