Jack Black takes on role in the film “Minecraft”, with Jason Momoa

Renowned actor and musician Jack Black continues to be one of Hollywood's top choices for roles in films based on video games. According to a publication on the website Variety, Black will play Steve in the next “Minecraft” film. He joins actors Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker) and Emma Myers (Wandinha), in the adaptation for live-action from Mojang's famous sandbox game.

Previous experience and gaming credibility

Jack Black is known for his performance in blockbuster last year, in the adaptation of the Super Mario Bros. franchise. In this film, he lent his voice to Bowser, in addition to singing the song “Peaches”. Performing well in the video game-based film, it now stands out as an ideal choice for the “Minecraft” film. It is important to remember that Black is also cast in the adaptation of Borderlands, where he will voice Claptrap, and participates in two productions of the Jumanji series. His credibility as a gamer is unquestionable, with notable roles in games such as Broken Age, Psychonauts 2 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2.

Long journey to the cinema

The production of the film “Minecraft” has a history that spans almost a decade, going through different phases and directors. Initially linked to the project, director Shawn Levy, from “Steel Giants”, was succeeded by Rob McElhenney, creator of “It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia” (Star+), who tried to create a Minecraft-style adventure, taking inspiration from 1985 cult classic, “The Goonies.” Later, director Peter Sollett proposed an approach centered on “a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers“, trying to save his Overworld (initial dimension of the game) blocked from one Ender Dragon (villainous dragon from the final phase of the game). After so many changes and different views on the live-action, Jared Hess (from Nacho Libre) took over as director in 2022, joining Momoa, and since then, changes to the plot have remained shrouded in mystery. What can be known is based on the game's own story, which highlights Steve, who is the game's original default avatar, and a female counterpart called Alex.

The film's release date is set for April 4, 2025, by Warner Bros. and Legendary, with the production of adaptations live-action about to start. The exact plot of the film remains unknown, but the certainty is that Jack Black will continue to lend his unique talent to the world of video games and cinema.
