Lollapalooza 2024 opens with a more pop/punk rock sound; see everything that happened on the 1st day

São Paulo returned to being the city of music this last Friday (23), with the start of Lollapalooza 2024, at the Autódromo de Interlagos. Even in closed weather and rain, Interlagos breathed rock in front of thousands of Brazilians who did well and starred in all the presentations.

Brazilian singers Luisa Sonza, the group Baiana System and Marcelo D2 represented national music at the festival, while Blink-182 and The Offspring led the nostalgic aspect of the festival. punk rockwith the first band finally arriving on Brazilian soil after 30 years of promises.

There were three 'Made in Brazil' artists on the Lolla stages. Starting with the Queen of Brazilian Pop, Luísa, who innovated with a greater predominance of wind instruments in the soundtrack of her performances and a more country aesthetic represented by the costumes of the 25-year-old singer from Rio Grande do Sul, and the stage setting.

However, regarding the structure of the show, Luísa continued with her successful formula: well-executed choreography, jokes involving her cheating past with her ex, Chico Moedas, and the exclusion of the same name in the hit “Chico”, paying homage to Chico Buarque – Sonza also performed her version of “Folhetim” before singing “Chico”.

Marcelo D2 brought his essence to the stage, adding some samba touches. Their show ended up being less crowded due to the high competition from Blink-182. As a highlight, the rapper activated his romantic side and used the space to “celebrate” his marriage to Luiza Machado. “Let's celebrate our wedding here”said Marcelo D2 after justifying that his wedding party was prevented by the coronavirus pandemic.

Finally, another Brazilian performance that usually attracts a lot of fans and which, unfortunately, gathered a slightly smaller number due to the other artists at Lollapalooza 2024, was that of Baiana System. However, it was only when the unmistakable guitar chords of “Saci” began that the traditional circle opened in style and only ended with the end of the show.

“Cabeça de Papel”, “Capim Guiné” and, mainly, “A Mosca”, the band's 2022 single alongside Tropkillaz, Dog Murras and Vandal, infected spectators.

Fletcher and Arcade Fire

American Fletcher, one of the first international attractions to perform, infected the stage with her charisma and sensuality. With her songs more focused on suffering, the singer, famous for writing songs about same-sex relationships between women, frequently joked with Lollapalooza spectators, including giving a fan a peck, before singing “Girl Of My Dreams”.

Fletcher praised her voice and performance, something very positive for the singer's lovers and fans – since the artist was diagnosed with Lyme disease, which affects the vocal cords and can harm her vocal performance.

Another concern was with Arcade Fire, but in another more complicated situation: leader Win Butler is facing accusations of sexual crime, so much was expected about how his performance would be and the attitude of the fans present with Win's entry.

Arcade's fans followed Win Butler at all times, marking moments between the union of the singer's voice with the beautiful chorus of the audience. Furthermore, it is worth highlighting the emotional version of “Águas de Março” sung by Butler, by the legendary singer Elis Regina.

Headline of the day: Blink-182 and The Offspring

The event is also marked by the attractions most awaited by fans: Blink-182 and The Offspring, exciting spectators with the footprint punk rock nostalgia for the 90s and 2000s that permeated the entire day of the festival.

Blink-182 thrilled the audience with their hits and their interactions with fans with “childish” jokes. Even with the members almost reaching 60 years old, there is still strength among the band members and charisma towards the public.

A very positive point present in the Blink-182 show at Lolla, which ends up being even more routine for these big musical attractions, is the issue of obviousness. The group extended their introductions and created an atmosphere of suspense over which the song would be played by the band, something very different. The show, however, was entirely based on nostalgia and featured drummer Mark Hoppus on vocals, with guitarist Tom DeLonge's voice much “Far” from what was expected.

Lastly, The Offspring really needed the audience to help with the singing, as Dexter Holland's vocals again failed after a busy schedule at other music festivals such as Planeta Terra, Planeta Atlântida and Rock in Rio – another major Brazilian music event which featured three performances by the band. For the remainder of the show, The Offspring relied on the charisma of its vocalist and interacted well with the audience.

For Saturday's show, marking the second day of Lollapalooza 2024, visitors can count on Kings of the Leon, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Hozier, Titãs, Manu Gavassi, Xamã, Kevin O Chris and others on the Budweiser, Alternative, Perry's stages by Johnnie Walker and Samsung Galaxy.
