São Paulo has the month of May with the most hot days since 1961

According to the ClimaTempo website, the city of São Paulo may experience the hottest days in May since 1961. So far, five days have had temperatures equal to 27°C or higher, it is expected that the temperature will only soften around from Tuesday (9).

It is usually in the month of May that the temperatures begin to drop with the decrease in insolation. However, the people of São Paulo were surprised by a warmer month of May.

In May 2018, the city of São Paulo also had five days of the first week of the month with temperatures of 27°C or higher. In the following, the city registered similar numbers in the first week of May.

Even with these two recent consequences, experts warn that high temperatures are not normal. According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology, such temperatures only occurred in the month of May in the years 2019, 2018, 2010, 2000 and 1999.

The National Institute of Meteorology pointed out the following maximum temperatures in the first days of May in the city of São Paulo:

05/1 – Maximum temperature of 27.7°C

2/05 – Maximum temperature of 28.4°C

05/3 – Maximum temperature of 27.7°C

05/4 – Maximum temperature of 28.4°C

05/5 – Maximum temperature of 29.3°C

As the temperature is expected to soften only on Tuesday (9), the city of São Paulo may have above-average temperatures for eight days in the month of May.

The average maximum temperature for the month of May is 23.4°C. Current figures are 3.6°C or more above the normal average for the month.

The ClimaTempo website indicates that temperatures should only settle in the middle and end of the month with the expected averages. And they warn that those who like the cold should not expect a month of May with temperatures the same as in previous years, even with some cold fronts on the way.
