The new album

After a seven-year break, this is Shakira's 12th album. The new album has 16 tracks, eight new compositions, a remix, and seven hits that the singer previously released, such as “Music Sessions Vol. 53″ with Bizarrap, “TQG” with Karol G, “Monotonía” with Ozuna, “Te Felicito” with Rauw Alejandro, “Copa Vacía” with Manuel Turizo and more. The seven previously released tracks have already accumulated a combined total of 3.7 billion plays on Spotify.

Turning tears into diamonds

Most of the songs on the new album have a recipient known to the public: Shakira's ex-boyfriend, Gerard Piqué, with whom the artist has two children. The relationship lasted 11 years, the couple's separation occurred during 2022, and according to Shakira's own words on her Instagram, the process of building the new project helped her overcome the breakup. The artist declares that she feels like she is turning “tears into diamonds”, a perfect metaphor to exemplify the composer’s ability to transform pain into art.

In an interview with the UK Times newspaper, the singer commented on the new album: “(It is) the transformation of pain into creativity, frustration into productivity, anger into passion, vulnerability into resistance. There were so many parts of my life that fell apart before my eyes and I had to rebuild myself somehow, picking up the bones from the ground and putting them all together. And music was the glue that held it all together.”.

The “Last” for Gerard Piqué

The final track of the new album, titled “Última”, caught the public’s attention precisely because its direction towards Gerard was noticeable. In the song, Shakira demonstrates vulnerability and reveals how she felt after the breakup. Some phrases in the song indicate that Piqué tried to get closer to the artist and asked for a reconciliation, however, in the last phrases, Shakira admits her desire to be alone and to rediscover herself away from her ex.
