Sovereignty of the Palestinian State is recognized by Spain, Ireland and Norway
– trending news updates, world news, local news and all about nations, states and governments.

Adopting an important measure, with great impact on the world stage, Spain, Ireland and Norway announced this Wednesday morning (22), their recognition of the State of Palestine.

The leaders of the countries had already declared their opposition to Netanyahu's attitudes since the beginning of the occupation in Gaza, which led the prime minister to request the presence of his ambassadors in Ireland and Norway for “urgent consultations”. In addition to the two, the summons of the leader of the Israeli embassy in Madrid seems imminent.

Although the G7 countries do not recognize the existence of the Palestinian State, the leaders who spoke today in favor of recognition believe that other European Union countries can follow their example. Until 2014, the only European country to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state was Sweden.

The importance of recognition

Gaza has suffered several attacks by the Israeli government since Hamas (Palestinian terrorist group) carried out an attack on Israel, on October 7, 2023. Since then, more than 35 thousand Palestinians have been killed, including elderly people, women and children. Thousands of children were left without their families, practically the entire population of the Gaza Strip is without food, water or housing. The biggest criticism from Benjamin Netanyahu's opponents is precisely the disparity in his response to the Hamas attack, given that the overwhelming majority of victims of its military incursion are not members of the group.

Despite the historic gesture by Spain, Ireland and Norway, this will not be a crucial measure for a ceasefire, or even recognition by the UN, however, it raises the hope that more countries will adopt the stance, which isolates, increasingly, Israel and its prime minister of the Western world.

Furthermore, it is possible to observe an “opening of the eyes” of world leaders in relation to the Palestinian people, which is clear in the rejection that the president of the United States, Joe Biden, has faced after denying that there is a genocide in Gaza. A series of recognitions by these leaders puts pressure on Israelis and countries that are actually in a position to stop the mass murders against Palestinians, mainly the USA.
