Surprising! Hamilton takes pole at the Hungarian GP

Driver Lewis Hamilton surprised Formula 1 fans this Saturday (22), during qualifying for the Hungarian GP, and won pole position, the first since December 2021, when the British took pole for the Saudi Arabian GP. This weekend’s qualifying served as a test for a new format on tire availability and Mercedes managed to overcome Max Verstappen’s Red Bull.

First pole since 2021

Hamilton and Mercedes have gone through ups and downs in the last two years of F1, and the driver has not managed to qualify in first place until then. The pole conquered this Saturday could be a key change for the team, which dreams of a victory for the seven-time champion. Hamilton scored a time of 1m16s609, second comes Verstappen with just 0s003 more, and Lando Norris was third with a time of 1m16s694.

Hamilton’s last victory in a race coincidentally also happened at the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP and took the championship dispute to the last race, in which Verstappen won and won his first title.

Weekend with news in F1

The Hungarian GP, held at the Hungaroring circuit, is already marked in the history of F1, as it is the first time that the new classification format has been used. Before, teams and their drivers could choose which tire compound they would use in each stage of qualifying (Q). Now, in addition to reducing the available tires from 13 to 11, everyone will use the hard compound in Q1, the medium in Q2 and the soft compound in Q3.

The change caused some discomfort in the drivers this weekend during free practice and even Hamilton and Verstappen criticized the new format and its consequences, in which they argue that with the continuation of the format there would be fewer cars on the track and, therefore, less action from the drivers during qualifying.

The Hungarian GP race takes place this Sunday morning (21), in the city of Budapest, starting at 10 am (Brasília time). Verstappen (Red Bull) leads the championship with 255 points, followed by his teammate Pérez with 156 points. Alonso (Aston Martin) is in third with 137 points and Hamilton appears in fourth with 121 points.
