Taylor Swift talks about tribute at Christ the Redeemer

This Friday (17), Taylor Swift performed the first show of “The Eras Tour”, in Rio de Janeiro. The singer took advantage of a moment during the presentation to comment on the tribute she received from fans at Christ the Redeemer.

Taylor Swift fans, better known as “Swifties”, organized a projection of the “Junior Jewels” shirt – used by the singer in the video for “You Belong With Me” – on the Brazilian monument, last Thursday (16). During the act of the “Folklore” era, Taylor spoke about how she was in disbelief that the projection was real.

“People kept sending me pictures of this image and I kept saying, ‘No, there’s no way this is real, this has to be photoshopped, because there’s no way this is real.”joked the singer. “I would like to start by saying that I feel completely unworthy of this honor, but it is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.”concluded Taylor Swift.

Organization of the tribute

With “The Eras Tour”, Taylor Swift managed to return to Brazil after 11 years. Days before the singer’s arrival in the country, the “Swifties” decided to organize a real reception and it all started with a tweet.

To Splash Uol, student Cristian, who came up with the idea for the projection on the social network X, said he thought of the tribute after Swift praised an action carried out by the Argentines. Cristian came up with the idea, but art director Gabriel Dadam created the design that showed how the monument would look with the “Junior Jewels” t-shirt, which quickly went viral.

In an attempt to make Cristian's idea a reality, fans began to request the action from Rio's mayor, Eduardo Paes. However, the mayor informed the “swifties” that they should ask Father Omar, as he would be responsible for authorizing the projections on Christ the Redeemer.

After many comments from fans on his Instagram, the priest stated that he had contacted Taylor Swift's advisors, because, in order to carry out this tribute, a social action was necessary. On the morning of last Thursday (16), shortly before the singer landed in the country, Paes announced that the tribute at Christ the Redeemer would be made that night.

Swifties Hit Social Action Goal

For the screening, Father Omar proposed that the “swifties” collect more than 20 thousand units of panettone and mineral water, which would go to people in vulnerable situations.

The singer's fans raised more than R$180,000 for the Archdiocesan Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer in less than 24 hours. During the show in Rio, Taylor Swift said that she is “very proud” of everything the fans did.

The singer will also perform on November 18th and 19th at the Nilton Santos Stadium, in the north of Rio, and on the 24th, 25th and 26th at Allianz Parque, in São Paulo.
