Thiago Monteiro passes quali and secures main draw for Master 100 in Madrid

The main draw of the Masters 1000 in Madrid has another Brazilian guaranteed. Ceará's Thiago Monteiro beat Moldovan Radu Albot this Tuesday (23), competing in the last round of qualifying, in a tough three-set game lasting 2h26, the match was finished in detail and had a final score of 7/6 (8-6), 1/6 and 6/4.

The tennis players faced each other for the second time with Monteiro winning. With the victory he joins João Fonseca from Rio and Thiago Wild from Paraná to compete in the Spanish tournament.

Qualifying for the main draw gave tennis player Monteiro a place to compete in the Masters 1000 for the 10th time in his career. Debuting at this level in the 2017 tournament in Indian Wells, where he fell on his debut. The player has only three victories, all won last season, when he advanced to the second round in Miami, Rome and Madrid.

The campaign

Coming from just one victory in six games played, Thiago Monteiro begins his journey in the Masters 1000, the tennis player needed to win both qualifying matches to continue in contention. His first victory was yesterday (23), in a dispute with Frenchman Lucas Pouille, 2-1 (4/6, 6/4 and 6/4).

Brazilians in Madrid

Brazil has three representatives in Madrid, after Monteiro's classification to make up the main draw of the Masters 1000, tennis players Thiago Wild and João Fonseca will represent the country in the men's singles category. Wild is the number 1 tennis player in Brazil and Fonseca, a guest athlete, is guaranteed to participate in the tournament.

Bia Haddad Maia will also represent Brazil, in the WTA 1000 category in Madrid, she is number 1 in our country and is in 14th place in the WTA ranking. Haddad will compete this Thursday (25th) on Spanish clay, with a time not yet defined for the match to take place.
