United Kingdom announces donation of BRL 500 million to the Amazon Fund

This Friday (5), the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) met with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, In London. At the meeting, the premier informed that it will invest R$ 500 million in the Amazon Fundwhich funds restoration projects in the world’s largest rainforest.

Sunak stated in a publication on social networks that Lula has shown himself to be a great leader on climate issues: “I am pleased that the UK is contributing £80 million (R$501 million at current exchange rate) to the Amazon Fund so that we can help stop deforestation and protect biodiversity.”



Lula thanked the prime minister for the donation and said that this is the moment to “normalize relations between Brazil and the United Kingdom” and that the future can generate important partnerships. The petista said that it is possible to do much more in our trade relations, and that this is a resumption of Brazil’s relationships with the world after a period of isolation and that the Brazilian government is interested in dialoguing on ways to increase trade relations.

The Brazilian president also spoke about climate change and emphasized that Brazil attends all international forums and that it assumed the commitment to eliminate deforestation by 2030 and stated that rich countries need to fulfill the commitments defined in the COPs and that countries with large areas of forest need support.

Brazil is the fourth country that receives the most donations from the International Climate Finance (ICF), the most important British program that finances projects in the area, with resources of 260 million pounds (about R$ 1.4 billion). President Lula is in the United Kingdom and his main agenda is the coronation ceremony of Charles III which takes place this Saturday (6).
