This Saturday (6), the Brazilian government condemned the invasion by Ecuadorian police forces of the Mexican Embassy, in Quito, the Ecuadorian capital. In addition to Brazil, other Latin American countries also criticized the action, including Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Chile, Peru and Colombia.
Through an official note released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the press, the government repudiated the action and declared that there is no argument that justifies such an act. “The measure carried out by the Ecuadorian government constitutes a serious precedent, and should be subject to strong rejection, whatever the justification for its implementation”he declared.
In a statement, Itamaraty also stated that the invasion is a violation of the American Convention on Diplomatic Asylum and the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations. According to article 22 of the Vienna Convention, the locations of a diplomatic mission are inviolable and are protected by international law.

Through the social network X, formerly Twitter, Lula reposted the Itamaraty publication and added: “All my solidarity with the president and friend @lopezobrador_.”

Argentina, whose government led by Javier Milei, which has differences with Mexico, also joined Latin American countries in condemning the episode and recalled the recent moment in which it granted diplomatic asylum to political leaders.
The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry was another to repudiate the action, expressing “the most resounding rejection” of the invasion of the Mexican embassy. In a statement, the country stated that this is a worrying episode for Ecuador and the world.
Diplomatic crisis
Shortly after the invasion that resulted in the detention of former Ecuadorian vice-president Jorge Glas, a refugee in the embassy accused of corruption, Mexico announced the severing of diplomatic relations with Ecuador. “This is a flagrant violation of international law and Mexico’s sovereignty”said Obrador, who intends to take the case to the International Court of Justice.
The invasion occurred hours after Mexico granted political asylum to Jorge Glas. A chancellor Mexican Alicia Barcena stated that granting asylum is a constitutional right and that the action was in compliance with international conventions. “In granting asylum to Jorge Glas, I trust that the government of Ecuador will provide safe conduct as quickly as possible,” finished the chancellor. Daniel Noboa's government, however, refused to hand over the document authorizing Glas's travel to Mexico and invaded Mexico's diplomatic headquarters.
