French navy seized a Russian freighter
In the night from Friday to Saturday, the French navy seized a Russian freigh-ter en route to Saint Petersburg, BBC News reported on Saturday. The cargo ship Baltic Leader is said to be in the hands of a Russian company that is subject to European sanctions.
The sanctions were announced earlier this week by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The sanctions are aimed at, among others, Russian financial institutions and therefore also companies.

As a result, the 127 meter long Baltic Leader was no longer allowed to sail through the Channel and the ship was seized by the French navy overnight. He then escorted the cargo ship to the French port of Boulogne-sur-Mer.
According to BBC News , the freighter that was carrying cars is now under investigation. The Russian embassy in France has said it is demanding an explanation for the seizure from the French government.
