Kazakhstan refuses to fight with Russians in Ukraine
Kazakhstan has refused a request to join troops in Russia’s offensive in Ukraine, even though it is one of Russia’s closest allies. In addition, the former Soviet state has announced that it does not recognize separatist states in eastern Ukraine, NBC News reports .

Russia said Monday that it recognizes the self-declared people’s republics of Luhansk and Donetsk as independent states.
“We welcome Kazakhstan’s announcement that it will not recognize Luhansk and Donetsk,” the United States National Security Council said in a statement. “We also welcome Kazakhstan’s refusal to send its troops and join Putin’s war in Ukraine.”

Kazakhstan’s refusal is remarkable. At the beginning of this year, the Russian-led military alliance CSTO sent more than 2,000 peacekeepers to help the Central Asian country crack down protests.
More than two hundred people were killed. About ten thousand people were arrested. The CSTO troops were withdrawn late last month after calm returned.

On paper, Russia has an army of 900,000 soldiers, of which 190,000 are now active in Ukraine. Why Russia is asking Kazakhstan for help is therefore a mystery to me. Seems a bit off the mark, given the support Russia gave Kazakhstan in the recent past.
In the long run, this welcome refusal could have consequences for Kazakhstan, which can again forget about Russia’s aid in the event of disturbances. The invasion of Ukraine is extremely massive. Most people thought it would be just one or two small incursions, but Putin wants to overthrow the whole country.
Ukraine is on its own but resist bravely, it is not an easy walk over. The president, who used to be a comedian, also turns out to be a steadfast guy who remains in his post at the risk of himself.
That the Russian soldiers work with everything without murmuring is beyond words, not a war that serves a higher purpose. Hopefully Russia will not be able to win. Hang in there dear Ukrainians!!
