Newly found gemstone to be auctioned for record price

At 55.2 carats, the ruby ​​stone found in 2022 by Canadian mining company Fura Gems, and portrayed by NY auction house Sotheby’s as extremely rare and the most valuable stone ever auctioned, is estimated to sell for a record. The last rare stone auctioned by the English company headquartered in the US was US$ 30 million, this new find by Gems, should set a new record.

The Sunrise Ruby, a 25.59 kg ruby ​​of Burmese origin, sold for US$30.3 at Sotheby’s Geneva in 2015, and still holds the world auction record for a ruby.

The Mozambican Ministry of Mines has granted an exploration license to Msawise Ruby Mining, owned by FURA Gems Inc., which is a gemstone mining and marketing company.

The five-year license granted covers an area of ​​almost 10,000 hectares within the Niassa National Park. Discovered at FURA’s ruby ​​mine in Montepuez, Mozambique last year in July 2022. The stone, weighing in at a considerable 55.22 carats, is also set to become the largest gem-quality ruby ​​ever to be sold at auction.

In its raw and untouched state, the stone was called the Star of FURA, considered by specialists as a sensational treasure of nature. Characteristics are noted for their fluorescence, exceptional clarity and vivid red hue known as pigeon blood, a color traditionally known only for Burmese rubies.

Founder and CEO of FURA Gems, Dev Shetty, stated that precious and important stones such as the FURA Star are extremely rare, and a 55.22 carat gem-quality, faceted ruby ​​is almost unheard of. He claims that witnessing the completion of the Star of FURA 55.22 was a monumental achievement for everyone.

The exceptionally important and rare new Mozambican journey begins at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, where it will then embark on a worldwide exhibition, scheduled in Taipei, China, Singapore, Geneva and Dubai before debuting at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York on June 8th.
