Prosthetics Record in Vol. 3

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, went well beyond the box office, and exceeded critics’ expectations. It has already secured the “PETA” (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, in its acronym in English) for animal activism; and broke the world record for the most use of prosthetics. The film directed by james gunn surpassed the title given to the comedy starring Jim Carrey“The Grinch” (2000).

In an interview with Variety, Alexei Dmitriew – head of makeup department of MCU, revealed that the production used 22,500 prosthetics, 500 wigs and 130 facial wigs. It took two makeup artists per character, 75 makeup artists to complete the looks; There is often a need for 90 professionals on set.

For the villain, two prosthetic pieces were needed: a helmet that was “mixed” to the actor's skin, giving the sensation that Iwudji's face was stretched. “Gunn wanted to make sure we saw every nuance of his performance,” highlighted the makeup artist.

Box office success

The film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has already grossed US$282 million worldwide, including at the international box office which raised an astonishing US$168 million.

Before the weekend, the superhero megaproduction directed by James Gunn was expected to gross between $130 million and $140 million abroad. Thanks to critical and public comment, the estimates were revised on Sunday.

The first two films of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” were also successful. The 2014 original ended its run with US$439 million in the United States alone and US$773 million worldwide, while the second film reached the US$863 million mark in global box office.
