european championship schedule – Sari van Veenendaal will no longer be in action at the European Championships in England, the KNVB reports on Monday. The goalkeeper and captain of the Oranjevrouwen has a shoulder injury left over from saturday’s opening game against Sweden (1-1) and will have to recover for a longer period of time. For Aniek Nouwen, the European Championship is not over yet.

The 32-year-old Van Veenendaal was injured in the opening phase of the game against Sweden. The goalkeeper collided with Stefanie van der Gragt and Lynn Wilms in the tenth minute on a free kick and injured her right shoulder.

Van Veenendaal continued after an injury treatment, but dropped out ten minutes later. She was replaced by 22-year-old Daphne van Domselaar. Van Veenendaal then went to the hospital to have a scan made. It has not been disclosed what exactly she is missing from her shoulder. She will return to the Netherlands on Monday.

“It’s terrible news,” said coach Mark Parsons. “Of course first of all for Sari, but also for our entire team. Sari is much more than a player of our squad. She is our captain and a very important leader. We’re going to miss her a lot.”

Jacintha Weimar has been called up as a replacement. The 24-year-old Weimar was at her club Feyenoord already in preparation for next season and will travel to England as soon as possible. Van Domselaar is most likely also in the next two group games under the bar at the Oranjevrouwen. The goalkeeper of FC Twente made a good impression against Sweden as a replacement for Veenendaal.

Tournament not over for Nouwen

Nouwen was also injured against Sweden, but for her the tournament is not over. The defender is expected to miss wednesday’s group game against Portugal due to her ankle injury. She remains with the selection of national coach Parsons to work on her recovery.

The injury for Van Veenendaal is a big line through the account of the Oranjevrouwen, who also received bad news on Sunday. Groenen tested positive for the coronavirus and is not available for the time being.

The Manchester United midfielder will have to be in isolation in the coming days. When she is free of complaints and tests negative, she can rejoin the selection. Against Sweden, the 88-time international played the entire match and was one of the standouts.

The Netherlands will play the second group game at the European Championships against Portugal on Wednesday. On Sunday, the defending champion closes the group stage with a match against Switzerland. Switzerland and Portugal were stuck at 2-2 in the mutual encounter on Saturday.
