The Flames of Fate – During an interview with Weekly Famitsu magazine, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda stated that Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate will shape the future of the series for the next ten to twenty years. Furthermore, he stated that while some of the game will reflect the conventional image of the franchise, there will be innovations to propel the franchise forward.

“Dragon Quest XII is being developed with the next ten to twenty years of the Dragon Quest series in mind,” said Matsuda. “There are parts that remain consistent with the traditional image of Dragon Quest, but new elements are also needed. After all, as a brand, we always need to innovate.”
Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate was announced in May and promises to have a darker story compared to previous games. Details about the narrative have yet to be released. We also still don’t know the release date and platforms that will receive the game.
