Chanel haute couture stars in Jeanne du Barry, shown at Cannes
A Chanel haute couture was one of the main protagonists on the opening day of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. It wasn’t on the red carpet, but on the big screen that the French luxury maison’s creations gained prominence in the character that gives its name to the film Jeanne du Barry.
The period feature film is a kind of biography of the last mistress of French King Louis XV. The work is by actress, director and screenwriter Maïwenn, who also gives life to the character.
Chanel and the director signed a collaboration to create six lookswith haute couture pieces and jewels by goldsmith Robert Goossensm.
Chanel helps compose the glamorous aura of the French court
Director Maïwenn considered the wardrobe a central aspect to represent the modernity of Madame du Barry, who became the monarch’s lover, was elevated to the nobility and became one of the main patrons of the time.
For this, Maïwenn carried out research that led her to creations by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel haute couture. In addition to providing the looks, the maison also involved Chanel Parfums-Beauté, maison d’art Paloma, Maison Lemarié and Maison Michel.
The brands helped with costume accessories, such as feathers, flowers and hats, in addition to the actors’ makeup.

The collab’s creations bring more realism to the royal glamor in Maïwenn’s costumes. The compositions drew attention at Cannes:
1. Velvet dress
The raspberry silk piece was inspired by models from the spring/summer 2000 collection.
2. Cream dress with train
In this composition, the cuffs embroidered with feathers and the collar are highlighted.

4. Beige tweed dress
The mix with a short jacket was inspired by the autumn/winter 1992 collection.
5. Leather satin dress
The model is very loose and was produced in cream color.
6. Two-tone petticoat
The beige and black piece caught the attention of the spectators.
Madame du Barry and Coco Chanel: Revolutionaries of their eras
The French director plays Jeanne du Barry, and Johnny Depp embodies King Louis XV. The feature reveals the facets of this female figure, which is often reduced to a courtesan. Also called Madame du Barry, she became a great patron of the time, supporting various works of art, fashion and culture. She became close to several artists and intellectuals, including the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltairde, with whom she was close friends.
Du Barry was born on August 19, 1743. A century separates her from Coco Chanel, founder of the maison that helped compose the looks in the film. The French stylist and businesswoman came into the world on the same August 19th and was also known for supporting artists and intellectuals of the 20th century.
