Claudia Raia recalls attempted abuse at age 13, At the height of his youth, at just 13 years old, Claudia Raia embarked on an adventure towards New York, driven by a ballet scholarship. The scenario was promising: studies in a city that is home to countless opportunities and accommodation at the home of a choreographer, a family friend and teacher at his mother’s academy. What should have been an enriching experience, however, took an unexpected turn.

Claudia reports that, after a month and a half of living the American dream, she faced a situation she would never have imagined. “After almost a month and a half there, he attacked me. He tried to grab me and I threw a crystal owl at his head,” she shared during a conversation with Tati Bernardi on the Sorry Something podcast.

Claudia’s instinctive reaction, guided by her mother’s always-remembered advice, was her defense: “My mother always taught me: if someone comes close to you or catches you, grab whatever is on your side and hit them in the head.”

An escape to safety

Faced with fear and urgency, Claudia did not hesitate. She grabbed her things and, with her heart racing, ran out of that environment that, until then, she had considered safe. The destiny? The unknown streets of Harlem.

Alone and vulnerable, she found help in the figure of a teacher, who saw her crying near a store. That woman’s solidarity opened new doors for Claudia, offering her a place to live and share experiences with three other people, until her mother could arrive and offer her the necessary support.

Today, at 57 years old, Claudia Raia looks back and sees this episode as one of the many challenges she faced and overcame on her journey. With a consolidated career and the public’s respect, she is preparing to shine again on prime time television. The actress, who never let obstacles stop her, continues to inspire with her strength and determination.
