Rangers FC midfielder Glen Kamara thinks Ondrej Kúdela should have been punished much more severely. The player of Slavia Prague was suspended for ten games by UEFA on Wednesday due to racism against Kamara.

“Players expect the authorities to take strong measures. UEFA should have imposed a minimum suspension of one year instead of these symbolic ten matches,” lawyer Aamer Anwar told BBC Sport on behalf of Kamara on Thursday .
“A much stronger message should have been delivered, as a sign that this disgusting behavior is not being tolerated.”

The 25-year-old Kamara himself was suspended for three games, because he attacked Kúdela in the players tunnel after the Europa League match between Rangers and Slavia Prague on March 18. After the game, Kúdela denied that he said anything racist.
“Kúdela’s suspension at least justifies Glen’s position,” said Anwar. “He is called a liar, but has been the subject of a terrible row. That Kúdela has received minimal punishment from UEFA disappoints him.”
‘Players now know that they do not have to be afraid’
Fraser Wishart, the boss of the Scottish Football Association PFA, hopes that Kamara’s attitude will at least lead to a breakthrough in the racism debate. He notices that players still often silence incidents.
“By standing up for himself, he has ensured that others will also dare to raise similar incidents,” he thinks. “They now know there is support for them in Scotland and no longer need to fear reporting misconduct. But without the support of all governing bodies, nothing will change.”
Racism has long been a problem in professional football. Recently, English clubs in particular have spoken out against racist behavior by supporters against players on social media.
Kúdela is an eight-time international of the Czech Republic and has to pass up the European Championship next summer due to his suspension. He also misses the return against Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday-evening.
