Pröpper’s comeback ends in drama – Davy Pröpper’s return to the Eredivisie has ended in a huge deception. The Vitesse midfielder appears to have suffered a serious knee injury in Saturday’s game with FC Emmen and is out for the rest of the season.

An MRI scan on Monday revealed that 31-year-old Pröpper tore the anterior cruciate ligament of his knee. The midfielder awaits surgery and months of rehabilitation. He’ll be out for at least the rest of the season.

The injury is a big downer for Pröpper. The nineteen-time Orange international had just returned to professional football at Vitesse. He took a one-year sabbatical after losing the joy of football.

More than a week ago, Pröpper made his comeback as a substitute against SC Heerenveen. Afterwards, he said he had found the pleasure again. Against FC Emmen, the playmaker, who had been training with Vitesse for a long time, was a starting player for the first time.

Pröpper returned to old nest

Pröpper suddenly retired from professional football in early 2022. At the time, he was under contract with PSV, where he had a reserve role under coach Roger Schmidt. At the time, Pröpper was “no longer comfortable in football culture”.

At Vitesse he returned to the old nest this year. He first trained for a few weeks to “fan the football fire” and at the beginning of this year signed a contact for a year and a half with the club, where he made his professional debut in 2010. (Pröpper’s comeback ends in drama)

Pröpper went through the youth academy of Vitesse. In 2015, he left the Arnhem club for PSV for around 4.5 million euros. With the Eindhoven team he won one national title and the Johan Cruijff Schaal three times. Abroad, Pröpper played for Brighton & Hove Albion from 2017 to 2021.

Technical director Benjamin Schmedes sympathizes with Pröpper. “This is a big blow for both Davy and Vitesse. He is, of course, excited and will need time to process this news. Of course we will give Davy all the support he needs.”
