NCT 127 – Understanding how NCT works is not always an easy task. The K-Pop group – whose name stands for Neo Culture Technology – is an ambitious project by the agency SM Entertainment launched in 2016 with the promise of having an infinite number of members. Exactly, infinity.
NCT
The group, as of April 2021, consists of 23 members: Taeil, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Taeyong, Ten, Mark, Yuta, Winwin, Haechan, Renjun, Jeno, Jaemin, Chenle, Jisung, Johnny, Jungwoo, Lucas, Kun, Xiaojun , Hendery, Yangyang, Shotaro and Sungchan .
They have different age ranges and nationalities, with only 10 being born in South Korea. The other 13 are from places like the United States, Japan, China, Thailand, Canada and Taiwan.
The members are divided into four sub-groups – NCT U , NCT 127 , NCT Dream and WayV – which may or may not have fixed line-ups. Let’s go to them!
NCT U
NCT U was the group’s first project to debut, in April 2016, and is considered the ‘rotating’ unit. His first releases were 7th Sense , featuring Taeyong, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun and Mark, and Without You , featuring Taeil, Doyoung, and Jaehyun, as well as a Chinese version of it featuring Kun. Different members are chosen for each of the unit’s releases, and all 23 members of NCT have been through it at least once.
NCT 127
NCT 127 was the first fixed unit of the project, initially with seven members: Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark and Haechan, who released the song Fire Truck in July 2016. Doyoung and Johnny joined the group in January 2017, and Jungwoo was the last addition in September 2018. The group had great prominence mainly in the United States, with the album Neo Zone reaching the 5th position of the music charts in the country in March 2020. In May of the same That year they released Neo Zone: The Final Round – a re-release of the previous one – which became their first album to sell over a million copies in South Korea.
NCT Dream
Also launched in 2016, the Dream unit was intended to bring together all underage members of NCT. It debuted in August 2016 with Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung, who would “graduate” and leave the group when they turned 19, allowing new, younger members to be added. Mark was the first to reach age and said goodbye to the unit at the end of 2018. However, after just over a year of them as a sextet, SM decided to abolish the graduation system and reinstate Mark due to the group’s popularity with its original lineup.
WayV
When NCT was announced in 2016, SM expressed their desire to have groups formed and promoting in different cities around the world and WayV is the first of them. Based in China, the unit consists of members Hendery, Kun, Lucas, Ten, Winwin, Xiaojun, Yangyang and debuted in January 2019, promoting most of the year exclusively in China. Despite this, their releases have always been successful in Korea and other countries around the world, with the Take Off EP reaching the top of iTunes in over 30 countries.
NCT 2018
The 2018 temporary project brought together the then 18 members to release an album and some documentaries about the group. The NCT 2018 album Empathy had six singles promoting the different units: Boss , Baby Don’t Stop and Yestoday , from NCT U with different line-ups, Go (NCT Dream), Touch (NCT 127) and Black on Black (NCT 2018).
NCT 2020 & 2021
Just like in 2018, NCT 2020 brought together all the now 23 members of the group into a single project. The NCT 2020 album Resonance Pt. 1 was launched in October 2020 bringing together the four existing units and introducing two new members: Shotaro and Sungchan , who have yet to officially debut in any of NCT’s existing units.
The single Resonance , released in December 2020, features all members on the same song. The group reconvened in December 2021 for the release of the album, Universe . Lucas was left out of this comeback.
