talking to the The GuardianYoshida explained that the talent of developers is what drives the industry, but admitted that seeing the list of best-selling titles dominated by games as a service would be “boring” for him.
“The gaming industry will never stop being a fun place. The industry keeps growing and growing, and I hope it continues to support and seek out creative ideas and people trying to work on new things. You don’t want to see the top 10 best selling games every year being almost the same, all of them becoming service games,” said Yoshida. “That would be a bit boring for me.”
The statement goes against what Sony itself is currently doing, with it planning to launch 12 games as a service by 2025. The company recently bought Firewalk Studios focusing precisely on this goal. According to her, Firewalk will help realize her goals of games as a service along with other studios working on these projects, including Bungie and Haven Interactive Studios.
However, Sony is still working on the single player games that helped define the PlayStation brand. The company always has many projects in development, and as Yoshida explained in the interview, it cancels “many games” in the period in which it evaluates their concept.
