This number means that the PS5 broke the sales record for a console in the quarter, more than double the amount that had been achieved by the PS4 and ahead of its rivals Switch and Xbox Series.
Sony ships a huge 6.3m units in the Jan to March qtr – that is a record for any console in Q1 and over 2x the PS4 record
It appeared unlikely in Jan but it has reached its upgraded 19m FY target following availability of an additional 1m units

Overall, the PS4 had already sold more than 40 million units in the same space of availability as the PS5, but it is worth noting that the current console has experienced stock issues caused by the pandemic.
The new numbers show that this setback is over and the trend is for the PS5 to sell more, reaching Sony’s goal of selling 100 million units during its useful life.
